ADULT CINEMA

"Teaser Trailer" (Illicit Recordings; 2016)

Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton

Man, I didn?t know what to expect from Adult Cinema when the download link for "Teaser Trailer" showed up in my inbox but it hooked me from the instant it started to the end of its play. It?s a sly, progressively-edged album whose music reminded me of Pink Floyd (especially on tracks like "We Sailed Across the Sea" and "Dreamt the Other Night") and The Alan Parsons Project (as on "Feel Your Eyes.") With its extensive use of keyboards and /or synthesizers, the ethereal vocals and the occasional bursts of heavy guitar, this album will mostly appeal to fans of those two bands.

I know. It's been said that Greta Von Fleet sounds too much like Zeppelin and maybe Adult Cinema sounds a little too much like Pink Floyd. I don't care. I like Pink Floyd and I like Adult Cinema. More of what you like shouldn't be a bad thing.

Interestingly, although this album was just sent to me, I discovered that it was actually released back in 2016. Based on the strength of "Teaser Trailer," I went on a hunt for other Adult Cinema titles. Gotta be careful when you're Googling "adult cinema" at work. But I've found one additional CD so far: "This is Your Life - 2018 Remastered Version 2018" but it's priced at nearly $1,000(!). Thankfully, the mp3 download is closer to $10.
