AMERIKAN KAOS

"The Sheeple Swing" (Metal Department; 2026)

Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton

For those of you who don't know (and I had forgotten), Amerikan Kaos is metal legend Jeff Waters' other band. As he tells it on his website (see below), Jeff's been delivering killer Annihilator albums (17 of 'em) for a long time now. But he's a fan of all kinds of music (again, from his website: blues, punk, thrash, speed, heavy metal, to pop music, classical and jazz). Annihilator, of course, is a heavy metal band. Amerikan Kaos lets Jeff play with other genres, gives him more freedom to create and allows him a voice separate from what people may have come to expect from him.

"The Sheeple Swing" is the last part of a trilogy and, I am sad to confess, I haven't heard the previous two albums, 2024's  "Armageddon Boogie" and 2025's "All That Jive." The good news is that, after listening to "The Sheeple Swing," I can't wait to pick those album up and give 'em a listen."

"The Sheeple Swing" is a collection of crisp, clear rock'n'roll that dips its toes in many of the genres Jeff mentioned. Some of the tracks here have a heavy groove-heavy tone ("(I Won) The Hottie Lottery"), some of them have that pure punk sound (appropriately, "The Punk Rockers Were Right," "The War on Moron") and most of them have a driving hard rock/heavy metal quality ("Last Breath," "Operation Hollywood"). All are performed flawlessly, with flourish and emotion (mostly anger) blasting through the music, the vocals and the lyrics.

I get nervous when a band or artist steps away from their signature sound but this isn't one of those times. "The Sheeple Swing" is a powerful album, from its musical performance to its angered attitude to its straight forward, no-bullshit lyrics. As a huge fan of Annihilator, I wasn't sure what to expect here but this album kicks ass through and through and makes you think at the same time. It's a pretty potent combination and you'll be glad you gave it a listen.
