ATERIAL

"War Machinery" (Hellion Records; 2004)

Reviewed by Snidermann

One thing I love is heavy metal music that is raw and gritty. If I can get that, I'll probably like what I hear.

Well, Aterial's "War Machinery" on Hellion Records is just that. The vocals are harsh and a little hard to understand and the music is hard, heavy and to the point. This combination of rough-edged music and vocals are just what the doctor ordered for my current musical state of mind.

The production on "War Machinery" is very well done although some of the words tends to blend in and sound forced. Still, this is one talented band and I liked "War Machinery" right from the beginning although, as the CD played on, I realized that the vocals continued to be difficult to follow. First, the production tends to bury them and second,  I think an accent may have made the English difficult to understand. Perhaps, like Rammstein or In Extremo, Aterial should have recorded in their native tongue.

Then again, I don't understand what Rammstein or In Extremo are saying either but I really like both of those bands.

Aterial: Mile Beil - guitar; Ralf Frauenrath - drums; Thorsten K?ne - guitar; Marcus Husemann - bass; Ralf Scholz - vocals.
