BLACK KNIGHT
"Tales From the Darkside" (Aeon Records)
Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton
Another in the steady collection of
epic metal bands, "Black Knight" deliver and deliver well. The power
chords, soaring vocals and fiery leads herein are plentiful. That's the good
news. The bad news is that there's nothing, musically, that makes Black Knight
stand out from their peers, either. Although the musical performances are
technically excellent, they don't offer anything that makes them stand out from
any other standard epic metal band. And the production here is a little flat as
well.
That's not to say that this CD should
be avoided. "Tales From the Darkside" is bludgeoning enough to warrant
a listen or two. And the lyrical content is surprisingly deeper than usual -
tales of poverty, war and the Almighty abound. And fans of the genre may want to
sample another band. Just don't expect a sound that is anything new or unusual.
Hey, sometimes that's just the ticket.
Black Knight: Pieter Bas Borger - vocals; Gertjan Vis
Richard Tseng - guitar; Hans Heider - bass; Rudo Plooy - drums.
