BOYFRNDZ

"Breeder" (Brutal Panda Records; 2014)

Reviewed by Jeff Rogers

Don't let the name of this band turn you away. These Austin, Texas psychedelic rockers have a cool and trippy sound. I hear a lot of screaming in so much of the music I listen to today ... and it gets old. I need something to break through the noise, something worth listening to. This is Boyfrndz's sophomore album and it's got weird slathered all over it. With plenty of hypnotic sound going on in the background, and cool vocals and guitar over the top layer, you get a constructed sound of melodies and rhythms that cause you to relax but you won't put you to sleep because this stuff is too interesting.

Fans of modern rock will dig Boyfrndz because it's got that cool vibe and feel to it. This is music you can get down to and still be in the know about bands forging a new sound. Each track has a reverb sound to it. This is the stuff that headphones were made for because it really showcases each instrument's ability to add layers upon layers without stumbling over each other.
