BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE

"Scream Aim Fire" (Jive; 2008)

Reviewed by Jeff Rogers

I'd never heard Bullet For My Valentine primarily because there are a few bands with "Valentine" in their name. My Bloody Valentine is one and they are an Irish Shoegaze band. Bullet For My Valentine is a Welch outfit that sounds like Dragonforce with Joey Tempest on vocals.

The guitar is smoking and if you really want to up your playing I suggest grabbing some of their tablature and a bottle of Advil -- you're going to need it. Their first album had more thrash on it but "Scream Aim Fire" is more heavy metal with twin-leads, solos and galloping rhythms. The drums are running all the time and it sound good but it also sounds dated.

These guys won the Welch best newcomers award in 2004 and the Metal Hammer Golden God award in 2006. Their playing is incredible but this type of music in the States has already been done. "Scream Aim Fire" may take you back for a time but flick on the radio and reality will set back in.

The band: Matthew "Matt" Tuck - lead vocals, rhythm guitar; Michael "Padge" Paget - lead guitar, backing vocals; Michael "Moose" Thomas - drums; Jason "Jay" James - bass guitar, vocals.
