FALLUJAH
"Xenotaph" (Nuclear Blast;
2025)
Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton
"Xenotaph," from San Francisco's Fallujah, is one of the most unique recordings I've heard this year. It's a fascinating combination of so many types of music, and interweaves so many different genres and styles, that it almost dares you not to listen to its entire 43-minute run time (a dare that I failed).
Complete with growling vocals, clean vocals, symphonic touches, death metal beats, one of the tightest rhythm sections I've ever heard, and technical guitar work that will simply floor you, "Xenotaph" surprises at every turn, changing pace and vocal styles at the snap of the fingers. Listening to this album demands your complete attention—this isn't something you can listen to while answering customer service calls at work—and deserves 100% of it.
This type of music isn't for everyone, and I get that. Everybody has their different likes and dislikes. But if you're looking for something new, unique and crushing this summer, you'll find it with Fallujah's "Xenotaph."
