Feral's self-titled album is the kind of record that you like from the first moment you hit the Play button. It throbs its way into your mind, like a musical brainworm, from the very first rough-edged guitar and it stays there, throughout the entire 11 track runtime. With its punk rock simplicity, its writhing electronic sounds and its chainsaw vocals, this album is at once unique and familiar, and you'll find yourself tapping your toe and bobbing your head to songs you've never heard before the very first time you play it through.
Most of the songs here are mid-tempo punkers; there's nothing here that matches the manic speed of, say, The Ramones. But what there is is solid walls of distorted guitars, attitude-laden vocals and songwriting that, once again, draws you into the album completely.
Track #8, a cover of The Stooges "Wanna B Your Dog" fits the rest of the collection like a glove. There are a few other cover songs here as well with the band adding their own edge to tracks originally by Paralasis Permanente and Los Broncos.
Instantly addictive, "Feral," is the kind of album you might not be aware of but you're very happy to stumble across. I'll be reaching for this one every time I want something rough, raw and just a little bit different.
