FIRST JASON

"Into the Fray" (CDN Records; 2025)

Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton

Here's a fun one. First Jason, a band led by Ari Lehman—the original Jason Voorhees from the Friday the 13th film series—has released a 14 track album featuring some rip-roaring heavy metal tunes and collaborations with original Friday the 13th composer Harry Manfredini that combines horror metal with horror film soundtracks to create a very unique collection of tunes perfrect for your Halloween party listening pleasure.

There are a lot of lyrics here about the hocky masked Jason Voorhees, with track title suchs as "Machete Mambo," and the grinding guitar riffs, rough-edged synhesizers and Lehman's sinister voice make the metal tracks pop, while the more "soundtracky" tunes could very well have come from a horror movie score with their eerie atmospheres and cinematic sound.

As I said, it's a lot of fun, perfect for a certain time of the year, but listenable always. A nice surprise from the worlds of heavy metal and horror movie film scores!
