G.G. ELVIS AND THE TCP BAND

"Back from the Dead" (Mental; 2008)

Reviewed by Metal Mark

This band includes members of such renowned punk acts as NOFX, Ill Repute, Aggression, Dr. Know and more.

In the summer of 2006 this band formed with the idea of taking Elvis songs and giving them a punk rock treatment. This album includes thirteen songs and most are under the three minute mark as they blast and rip their way through versions of the Kingís classics, such as "Viva Las Vegas," "Blue Suede Shoes" and more.

Due to the obvious experience of the players here itís solid enough music wise. Still, itís ultimately a joke album and the problem with many albums of that nature is how long the joke lasts. Elvis songs played real fast with rough vocals is mildly amusing for awhile, but it quickly becomes apparent that this band is a bit of a one trick pony.

Elvis was very much capable of making each of his songs very distinct but, in their treatment here, G.G. Elvis and associates tend to play the songs in a very similar manner causing many of the tracks to blend together. Too many songs are just fast with the exact same vocal style and this causes them to sound a bit too similar.

ďBack from the DeadĒ probably serves its purpose in bringing out a chuckle or two, but itís also probably going to be sitting on a shelf for awhile unless you just love novelty albums.
