JIZZY PEARL'S LOVE/HATE

"Punk Rock Fiesta" (Kenyon Records; 2025)

Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton

There's just something irresistible about Jizzy Pearl's Love/Hate's sound. It's this unique combination of Sunset Strip hair metal, hard rock and punk that's just so much fun to listen to . With its bouncy rhythms, its raw guitar sound, and Jizzy's solid vocals, the nearly 30-minute running time of "Punk Rock Fiesta" just zips by and you'll want to reach for the replay button right away.

The album opens with "You're Gonna Burn," a track that sets the stage of the remaining tracks. Driven by raunchy guitars, this track gets things off to the right start. The aggressive "Eye for an Eye is next, with more of a punk rock edge, while "Wrath of Love," up next, sounds like a sequel to the previous track, in tone and style.

The rest of the album follows suit, with the bulldozer sound of "Over the Edge" and the faster-paced "Didja Think You Could Fall in Love." Track six, "Can't Be Wrong" takes things in a different direction for a moment, with its more introspective sound and lyrics. Closers "I'll Be Your Shadow" and the energetic "Time To Take Your Pill" bring the album to a close in almost exactly the way it started.

Is "Punk Rock Fiesta" the greatest album of all time. Of course not. But it's such an fun and easy listen in the familiar Jizzy Pearl style that you'll find yourself listening to it over and over, and maybe digging up some of Pearl's back catalog as well.
