MIDNIGHT VICE

"Midnight Vice" (ROAR/Rock of Angels; 2025)

Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton

There's no way (at least in my opinion) that you can listen to Midnight Vice's self-titled album without thinking of Savatage. Midnight Vice are obviously heavily influenced Savatage and, you know what? That's okay with me. Because Midnight Vice nail it here.

"Midnight Vice" is chock full of fiery guitars, speedy rhythms and a vocalist who can rip out the high notes with the best of them. Each track is well-written, superbly performed and will have you banging your head and pumping your fist emphatically. It's a reminder that old school power metal was (and is) truly great.

My favorite tracks were the cascading "Baptized by Fire" and the epic-sounding "Excalibur." And, if there were any question about the Savatage influence, the album concludes with a powerful, reverential cover version of that band's "White Witch."
