MOTHERSHIP

"Mothership" (Ripple; 2013)

Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton

Mothership’s CD is a great debut from a band that takes the stoner guitar fuzz and turns it into a driving rock’n’roll record. The band's stoner sound is definitely present here but, unlike a lot of stoner bands – and I love stoner music -- the music isn’t downbeat, trudging and slow. Instead, it rocks hard and at a relatively fast pace. It's sort of like hard rock-meets-stoner rock. Imagine classic hard rock bands like UFO and Bad Company with a fuzzier, stoner-tinged sound.

The songs are all well-written and loaded with subtle hooks. The production is crisp and clear. This is very much an album I will listen to a lot. I look forward to hearing much more from Mothership in the future.

Mothership: Kells Juett- Guitars/Vocals; Kyle Juett- Bass/Vocals; Judge Smith- Drums.
