TOM MORELLO
THE NIGHTWATCHMAN

"The Fabled City" (Epic; 2008)

Reviewed by Snidermann

I am of two minds when I listen to Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello and his solo release: "The Fabled City." I was not prepared to for what I got. I was expecting music along the lines of the aforementioned Rage, but instead what I got was more like a Johnny Cash sound.

The presentation is done very well, not as hard and heavy as I expected, but done very well. Like a fine wine, "The Fabled City" grows on you and, after a while, I found myself humming the tunes around the house.

"The Fabled City" is heartfelt, powerful and full of life. The more I spin this recording, the more I like it and I am forever finding things I missed before. Those expecting Rage Against The Machine may not like this recording, but fans of those artists who like to explore music will probably love it.

Kudos to Tom Morello for putting together a quality recording and not resting on past musical accomplishments to do so.
