NINTH CIRCLE
"Anthem of the Immortal" (Fighter
Records;
2025)
Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton
"Anthem of the Immortal," by American rockers Ninth Circle, is a pure and simple heavy metal album, complete with all the old-fashioned fixings: soaring vocals, heavy guitars, sparkling leads and a tight rhythm section. It's well-recorded, sharply played and well-written throughout. It reminds me a little of Judas Priest's "Nostradamus," not in subject matter, of course, but in style and production.
My favorite tracks were the driving "Don't Die," the breakneck closer "Burn Like the Sun," and the buoyant cover of Chicago's "25 or 6 to 4," featuring terrific guitar work and the horn section from WAR.
Does "Anthem of the Innocent" deliver anything fresh and/or new? No. Of course not. You wouldn't want it to. It's thirteen solid tracks of old-fashioned heavy metal the likes of which we don't hear enough of any more. And I enjoyed every moment of it.
