REAL BE EASYS

"Lost Paradise" (RBE Entertainment; 2006)

Reviewed by Jeff Rogers

I love funk! And the Real Be Easys are neck deep in it. They comingle their influences and that elevates this trio to above-standard musicianship.

I hate to say the Real Be Easys sound like this band or that band because they have their own sound, so I’ll just say a couple names but don’t forget the Real Be Easys have a sound all their own. If you dig the soul and funk of Fishbone and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, then these guys are right up there with those bands.

The guitar is incredible; it’s fresh and always jamming during the disc. I would even say it has a jazz and metal style fusing together. It’s hard to nail down, and that’s the beauty of Evan Jaffee's style. If you don’t find yourself moving to the first song, “Defunkt,” start picking out a headstone because you must already be dead. This stuff is groovy and will cause you replace some of the music on your current play lists.

The drums keep the rhythm section going and the bass is funky enough to make you want to pick it up because Paul makes it sound like a fun instrument to slap on.

“Jam On” is the slowest song among the tracks performed. There are also a couple of live tunes here but I couldn’t hear any crowd noise so I’m not sure what they wanted to prove there.

We often try to label music so we can organize our lives but I feel the power that these guys release and I’m not going to link them to a permanent style. I’ll just feed off their energy and maybe label them under, “Get up and move.”

Every now and then a band comes along and makes their mark and the Real Be Easys have etched a place for me. Give 'em a listen and tell me what you think.

The Real Be Easys: Evan Jaffee – lead vocals, guitar; Paul Testagrossa – bass, backing vocals; Zachary Thomas – drums, backing vocals.
