THE 69 EYES

Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton

"I Survive" is a four-track EP from The 69 Eyes, featuring a brand new track ("I Survive"), a vicious cover of Thin Lizzy's "Cold Sweat," and a couple of other tracks that may (or may not be) catalog tracks.
The band's general sound is a little like that of Danzig mixed with Wednesday 13. The new track (and title track), "I Survive," is a fast-paced anthem with Billy Idol-style vocals. (Some people have compared vocalist Jyrki 69 to Elvis Presley but I only occasionally hear that UPDATE Okay, upon second listen-through I heard a little more of that). The two "catalog" tracks are "In the Misery," a jaunty tune with considerably less-than-jaunty lyrics and the closer, "Devil's Rose," which has a grimy rock'n'roll vibe. My favorite track is the Thin Lizzy cover and, although The 69 Eyes don't do it as well as Phil Lynott and gang (but then, who does?), they add the band's sinister signature sound to the classic tune that makes it stand apart.
Bottom line here is easy enough: "I Survive" does what any good EP is supposed to do—make you want more from the band. Time for me to dive back into their earlier music and look forward to what the future has to bring.
