ULCERATE FESTER

"Souled Out" (Self-produced)

Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton

Ulcerate Fester, out of Almelo, Netherlands, play heavy, guitar-driven rock'n'roll with solid, astoundingly understandable vocals. The band first formed in 1989 as a death-grind band and that influence still shows in their music today. Happily, it's the intensity and musicianship that remains, not the brutal drivecore of death metal.

"Souled Out" is still heavy and tight, but the vocals are much more accessible and the songwriting much more controlled. These guys have been playing together for a long time and the tightness of this band shows. Imagine a sound somewhere between the Dio-era BLACK SABBATH and IRON MAIDEN and you get a pretty good idea of what Ulcerate Fester sounds like.

ULCERATE FESTER: GJ, drums; Erik, bass; Ardy, guitars; Michel de Groot, vocals; Mark Portier, guitars.
