"MTV2 Headbangers Ball: The Revenge" (Roadrunner Records; 2006)

Reviewed by Jeff Rogers

I’m not sure why MTV has to keep releasing all these heavy metal compilations. Could it be that they feel guilty for not giving metal its prime time slots? Could it be that they still want those of us who called MTV "Metal Television" back in the day to still associate our youth with their acronym? That’s probably why it's titled MTV2. But, I’ll give them kudos for gathering up a bunch of heavy metal songs and having them presented to a bunch of corporate grey hairs while those antiquated shareholders squinted and nodded “okay” just to get research and marketing out of their boardroom. Can’t you just see that happening?! HA!

I’m not a sucker for dual discs like this but, it does help to connect me with groups I may have little or no knowledge about while providing rare cuts or live tracks of bands I know very well. This CD includes 38 tracks and over 2 ½ hours of metal muscle that must be flexed at 11. Bands such as Slipknot, Hatebreed, Walls Of Jericho and Kingdom Of Sorrow all have unreleased tracks listed so that those who own all their discs will have one more arrow in their arsenal.

Iron Maiden, Lamb Of God and Killswitch Engage have live tracks listed. It’s a great concert capture to hear those guys rip it up without studio limitations and to hear the crowd screaming for more.

The other good thing to do is putting this CD on shuffle; it's various artists anyway, why not mix it up just a little more?

Rating Guide:

A classic. This record will kick your ass.

Killer. Not a classic but it will rock your world.

So-so. You've heard better.

Pretty bad. Might make a nice coaster.

Self explanatory. Just the sight of the cover makes you wanna hurl.
