"Mullets Rock! Too!" (Legacy; 2007)

Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton

Like the first "Mullets Rock" collection, there's no denying that this new compilation of classic rock tunes features some true masterpieces, but this second collection isn't quite as satisfying as the first go-through.

As I said, most of the tracks here are the stuff of hard rock legend. Boston's "More Than a Feeling," Foghat's "I Just Wanna make Love to You," Blue Oyster Cult's "Burnin' For You" and the J. Geils Band's "Love Stinks" are a few examples. Other tracks, however -- while entertaining -- just aren't up to snuff. We got Cheap Trick's "Surrender" on Volume I and "The Flame" on Volume II. While "The Flame" was a huge radio hit and not a bad song by any means, it is certainly no "Surrender." The same can be said of Ted Nugent's "Wang Dang Sweet Poontang" (it was "Free-For-All" on Volume I) and Ace Frehley's cover of ELO's "Do Ya" (which was never considered a classic).

Add that to the fact that we only have 18 tracks here as opposed to the first compilation and everything feels just a little incomplete.

Still, there's not a bad song to be found here and this CD's split into "Psyched!" tunes (rock anthems) and "Bummed!" tunes (love songs) is an interesting one. Unfortunately, without the breadth of its predecessor "Mullets Rock! Too!" seems like kind of an afterthought. Of course, that doesn't mean it won't still sound great, cranked up to 11, as you roar down the freeway in your Trans Am.

"Mullets Rock" (Epic / Legacy; 2003)

Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton

How could any collection of vintage rock hits manage to earn a three-and-a-half chainsaw rating? Easy. It just has to be this freaking great.

"Mullets Rock" is two discs and over two and a half hours of some of the greatest hard rock guitar songs of all time. Deep Purple, Foghat, Ted Nugent, Cheap Trick, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, Judas Priest, Blue Oyster Cult, Alice Cooper - they're all here (okay, except maybe AC/DC and Van Halen). Still, this is the CD that you'd imagine Beavis and Butt-head banging their heads to.

It'd be pointless for me to go through each and every track since anyone who's reading this knows at least 90% of the music hereon, and probably more like 99.9%. A simple posting of the tracks contained (below) will tell you all you need to know. Why listen to classic rock radio when you've got 35 tracks like these at your fingertips?
