"Rock Star" Original Soundtrack (Priority Records)
Reviewed by Snidermann
"Rock Star," the movie, is a paraphrased account of the real life story of new Judas Priest lead vocalist Ripper Owens, who the band recruited from a cover band.
In the film, Judas Priest became Steel Dragon and - like Judas Priest at the time - they are in search of a new vocalist.
"Rock Star," the movie, is good, but this accompanying sound track is outstanding. "Rock Star" the soundtrack flawlessly captures the very essence of 1980's excessive big rock stars and their cadres of drugs, sex and rock'n'roll.
And, on this CD at least, Steel Dragon is no group of actors pretending they can play heavy metal. Instead, Ozzy Osbourne/Black Label Society's Zakk Wilde is on guitar; Jason Bonham (son of Led Zeppelin legendary drummer John Bonham) is on drums; Dokken's Jeff Pilson is on bass; Black Label Society's Nick Catunese is on guitar and Yngwie Malmsteen vocalist Jeff Scott Soto share vocal responsibilities with Steel Heart's Mike Matijevic. The made-for-the-movie music by "Steel Dragon" is as good as some of the best stuff we heard in the 80s.
The classic music on the CD is just phenomenal with an tunes by Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, Ted Nugent, Kiss, and more. The new music balances quite readily with the new, proving that "Steel Dragon" matched the sound of the time and the genre perfectly.
A quick note about the "Rock Star" film: Jennifer Aniston and Mark Wahlberg do a remarkable job in this film. Their performances, along with the music, make the price of the movie ticket (or rental) worthwhile.
A classic. This record will kick your ass.
Killer. Not a classic but it will rock your world.
So-so. You've heard better.
Pretty bad. Might make a nice coaster.
Self explanatory. Just the sight of the cover makes you wanna hurl.
