...Former JUDAS PRIEST vocalist has announced that he's returning to the sound that made him the metal god he is. In other words, he's abandoning the industrial sounds that he recorded with TWO and FIGHT and is going back to his real heavy metal roots. Halford is going so far, in fact, as to recruiting songwriter Bob Halligan and producers Tom Allom and Attie Bauw, whom worked with Halford in his Priest days. ...GODSMACK's "Whatever" single has broken the records for most weeks on the active rock chart, besting CREED's record of 51 weeks by one week. Of course, CREED just put out a new CD so they've got the opportunity to take revenge on the record-stealing GODSMACK in the future...

...Just when you thought it was time to call your cable company and have them turn off MTV forever (okay, with the exception of Metal Mania), the Music(?) Network has announced a pair of programs designed to celebrate the resurgence of rock. First up is "1999: Return of the Rock," airing at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 25th. Hosted by METALLICA's Lars Ulrich, the program takes a look at the resurgence of rock during the past twelve months or so and focuses on recent successes by KORN, KID ROCK, LIMP BIZKIT and many more. Also featured will be new videos from NINE INCH NAILS, MARILYN MANSON and new artists such as PUYA and CHEVELLE. Next up will be "All-Time Rock Hard Videos A-Z," a 16-hour show that counts down killer hard rock videos from AC/DC to WHITESNAKE with a little bit of NIRVANA, HOLE and many, many more thrown in. "All-Time Rock Hard Videos" begins at 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 25th. In addition, viewers will be able to download music via MTV Online at http://www.mtv.com during the weekend, dubbed "Rock Weekend: Return of the Rock." Now the only thing left to discuss is whether or not Rock will forgive MTV for abandoning it in the first place...

...GODSMACK continue to ride the crest of success in the wake of their major label debut CD. The band will join renowned Salem witch Laurie Cabot when they shoot their new video for "Voodoo," the next single off their hugely successful debut. The video will be shot over the weekend of September 18th and will be directed by Dean Carr, who has previously directed clips for MARILYN MANSON and THE DAVE MATTHEWS BAND (how's that for variety?). During the shooting of the video, the band will partake in a genuine Wicca ceremony. SULLY ERNA, GODSMACK's lead vocalist, has been a practicing witch of the Wicca religion for the past decade...


...FRONTIERS RECORDS and NOW & THEN PRODUCTIONS have announced the signing of SIGNS OF LIFE. The band consists of TERRY BROCK (Ex-STRANGEWAYS), RANDY JACKSON (ZEBRA) and MARK MANGOLD and CHUCK BONFANTE, both of DRIVE SHE SAID. A bass player will be added at a later date. Negotiations are currently underway with a former member of a popular metal band. Says Mark Mangold of the upcoming project, "Our desire is to put up a new real kickin' ass rock band, which should try to refresh with new sounds and new ideas the entire scene. No worries: it will be super melodic rock!" The band has already begun writing and their first CD is predicted to hit stores sometime in April 2000...


...Sad news to report. Radio station WNEW-FM, which introduced New York listeners to such legends as JIMI HENDRIX and HOOTIE AND THE BLOWFISH, has switched to an all-talk format. The format change came after the station's ratings plummeted from 3% to 1.4 percent in recent years...


...ALICE IN CHAINS will release their much-anticipated box set on October 26, 1999. The incredible package will contain essential masters, newly-recorded tracks, rare b-sides, demos, remixes, never-before-heard live material, and an exclusive CD-ROM game and additional multimedia...


...Rumor no more: The original lineup of L.A. GUNS, including Tracii Guns, Steve Riley, Phil Lewis, Kelly Nickels and Mick Cripps has reunited and are out on tour now. A new live record has also been released...


...KISS is planning a special show for Halloween in Las Vegas, Nevada. The tentative date is October 29th. More info as it becomes available although - at the moment - it doesn't look like it will be a complete show...


...In other KISS news, The Dallas KISS Expo will take place on October 17th from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Special guests include Eric Singer and Bruce Kulick who will do a Q&A and perform with their band ESP (which also features John Corabi and Karl Cochran). Also appearing at the expo will be KISS tribute band SSIK, who perform without makeup and rather focus on the music (what a concept!). ...IRON MAIDEN have completed their "Ed Hunter Tour" - sold out despite the absence of their "Ed Hunter" CD in American record stores (although you can read our review by clicking here). The American version of the CD will also feature a hidden track featuring "Wrathchild" with vocals by recently returned-to-the-mic Bruce Dickinson. MAIDEN are currently in Europe where they will tour through October 1st. The band plans to return to the studio soon to record a brand new studio CD...


...MEGADETH's "Risk" opened at the #16 position of Billboard's Top 200. The CD, which is definitely the band's most daring work yet, has received critical acclaim for its inventiveness. Next week's sales will tell us what the masses think of it...


...PUYA will release a tribute song in honor of fellow Puerto Rican FELIX TRINIDAD who fights OSCAR DE LA HOYA on September 18th a the Las Vegas Mandalay Bay Hotel. ...It may not be hard rock or heavy metal, but "Cult Fiction," an upcoming CD from Virgin Records, may just be one of the coolest CDs ever. Featured on "Cult Fiction" are 17 classic songs that have so been ingrained in the minds of moviegoers and television viewers that simply hearing the song brings to mind their favorite scenes. ...MCA Records has signed METHOD OF MAYHEM, the new band of former MOTLEY CRUE drummer TOMMY LEE. The CD, which also features rapper TILO, offers an impressive list of guest artists as well, including MIXMASTER MIKE, FRED DURST, SCOTT & KEN, U-GOD, LIL' KIM, SNOOP DOG, GEORGE CLINTON, BOBBY B. and KID ROCK. Says Lee, "I set out to do a solo record with TiLo. We wrote some tunes, and before we knew it, we were getting calls from other artists that wanted to collaborate. I never thought then that it would morph into this huge thing that is now Methods of Mayhem.
