...MARILYN MANSON will perform a New Year's Eve show at what is becoming one of rock's most revered clubs: The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. With only 1600 tickets available, you can bet this will be one of the hottest tickets of the year. The following evenings - assuming the Joint is still standing after the Manson show, THE BRIAN SETZER ORCHESTRA will take over the stage. The Hard Rock Hotel, currently undergoing a $100 million expansion, is a rock'n'roll hot spot in one of the hottest party towns in the world...

...The original BLACK SABBATH line-up will appear on this Friday's "Late Show With David Letterman," their first time on U.S. television since 1976. The band is currently crossing the country in their first-ever in-store appearances, putting their John Hancocks on copies of their killer new double-live CD, "Reunion." (See our review). In addition, the band begins a major U.S. tour on December 31st at Diamondback Stadium on New Year's Eve with a lineup that's to die for, including MEGADETH, SLAYER, PANTERA and more...

...Wax Trax Records will release two new KMFDM collections on November 17th. "Agogo" is a collection of rare, discontinued and previously unreleased tracks from the band, including: "Thank You," "Godlike," "Virus-Dub," "Rip the System" and more. The second CD, "Retro" is a collection of rare, unreleased or out-of-print KMFDM tracks that was originally only available as a promo only. Included on "Retro" are "Power," "A Drug Against War," "Juke-Joint Jezebel" and more...

...A fan in Concord, California is suing AEROSMITH for alleged permanent hearing loss after a show at the Concord Pavilion in October 1997. Mark Nieto claims that he has continuous ringing in his ears and that he was "not aware of warnings for ear damage" when he attended the show during the band's "Nine Lives" tour. Guess someone forget to mention to Nieto that a hard rock band like Aerosmith might be loud live in concert...

...Rhino Home Video will release JIMI HENDRIX: RAINBOW BRIDGE for the first time ever on DVD on December 1, 1998. The film will be completely restored to its original, uncut length and twelve minutes of rare trailers have been added as well. The film records Hendrix's performance - only three months before his death - atop Hawaii's Haleakala Volcano in July 1970...

...SMASHING PUMPKINS, LENNY KRAVITZ and IGGY POP will all appear on the VH-1 Fashion Awards show airing on October 27th at 9:00PM. The Pumpkins will perform "Crestfallen" and Kravitz and Pop will join together to perform their rendition of DAVID BOWIE's "Rebel, Rebel."...

...Independent record label , Lion Music, have updated their webpage to include a live concert excerpt of VISION in real audio format. In addition, users can purchase the latest CDs from LARS ERIC MATTSSON, VISION, STRATOVARIUS, TAROT, MANNERHEIM, ZERO NINE, KINGSTON WALL, ANTIDOTE, BROADCAST, EUROPE, STEFAN ANDERSSON, D.A.D., APOCALYPTICA, GUITARS SLINGERS and more directly on the Lion website. For more information, check it all out at http://www.lionmusic.com...

...You won't be able to escape KISS no matter where you go this Halloween night. In addition to the tons of silly masks you'll see at your door, the band is also scheduled to appear on Fox TV's "Millenium" on October 30th (starring as themselves on the set of a "B Horror Movie" that is plagued by a serial killer) and their "Psycho Circus" kick-off show at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles will be broadcast live on the internet at http://www.pepsi.com and on the Fox network Halloween evening at 12:00 midnight (half an hour only, live on the East Coast, tape delayed on the West Coast). As if that weren't enough, the band's consumer video, a tie-in with the "Psycho Circus" album, will be in stores on October 27th (complete with 3-D glasses and bonus, non-LP, single CD)...

...Producer JACK DOUGLAS - who has worked with the likes of JOHN LENNON & YOKO ONO, PATTI SMITH, CHEAP TRICK, SUPERTRAMP, GRAHAM PARKER, THE WHO, GEORGE HARRISON, BOB DYLAN, THE NEW YORK DOLLS, ALICE COOPER, THE KNACK and many more - found the production of the new double-live AEROSMITH CD, "Somewhere South of Sanity," a daunting chore. Sez Jack: "To make a purely live album like this one, I was challenged by the amount of live performances I had to go through. I listened to over 60 shows and picked the best performance for each song." Was all that work worth the effort? "The result is explosive," Douglas says, "Listening to the CD is actually a physical experience."

...Orlando, Florida rockers THE KILL are setting out on a mini-tour in support of their Forbidden Records release, "superdragsmackheadpsychoplasticgogopunk." For more information check out http://www.forbiddenrecords.com...

...Rock City New is hosting HELARAGE at the Country Club in Reseda, California on New Years Eve. ATOMIC PUNKS (a VAN HALEN tribute) may also be on the bill. On November 7, the band joins SLAM ALICE in Ventura (see below)...

...The rumors are true: The original SLAM ALICE line-up have reformed (at least temporarily) and will perform on Saturday, November 7, 1998 at the Red Cove in Ventura, CA. Slam Alice, of course, is the legendary unsigned rock band whose hits include "Deadly Spitting Cobra," "Taco Bell," and "Angels in Training." The band is currently working on a website; we'll let you know here when it's completed...

...BILLY SQUIER fans can now download a previously unreleased alternate version of Squier's "Lovin' You Ain't So Hard," from his 1993 LP, "Tell the Truth." The cyber-single does not appear on Squier's upcoming "Happy Blue" but is reportedly indicative of the direction Squier is taking on the new album. Fans can download the single by going to the J-Bird Records website at http://www.j-birdrecords.com. It ain't free: the download costs $1.99; however, the player required to play the single (in a2b format) can be downloaded for free at http://www.a2bmusic.com...

...The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland lost $1.37 million last year, with revenues down 17% to $16.8 million. Hall executives said the loss was no cause for concern, saying this sort of loss was not unusual for a "start-up" business. We won't guarantee it, but we think that the addition of OZZY OSBOURNE and the rest of BLACK SABBATH - currently under consideration as potential inductees to the Hall of Fame - might turn things around...

...Talk about your great road trip albums: The Right Stuff label has released "Road Songs II," a collection of 30 rock tracks that are perfect for blaring at full blast as you tear up the highway in your Harley...or Volvo for that matter. The two CD set comes packaged in a Harley-Davidson embossed leather CD wallet and contains songs by DEEP PURPLE, QUEEN, LYNYRD SKYNYRD, GEORGE THOROGOOD, MONTROSE, JIMI HENDRIX, TED NUGENT and many, many more. Says Tom Cartwright, vice president of product development for the Right Stuff: "The first 'Road Songs' was very successful and we realized that we had only skimmed the surface of the connection between two American icons -- rock 'n' roll and Harley Davidson. Our continue partnership with Harley Davidson brings into play one of the most powerful brand names on the planet. In terms of the classic rock audience, it's a perfect fit." For more information on "Road Songs II" check out the Right Stuff website at http://www.bakernorthrop.com.

...400 lucky winners of the Miller Genuine Draft Blind Date contest were flown to London to see HOLE and THE CURE live at the Forum in London on October 12th. The Blind Date show marked the end of the 1998 Blind Date program. Said CURE vocalist Robert Smith, "Personally, I'd like to go to a show where I didn't know who was playing, but it would be difficult to do an entire tour on this premise. It was one of the strangest concerts that I've ever done, but at the end it was good fun."...

...Arista recording artists PUSHMONKEY will perform "Handslide" from their recently released self-titled album (see our review) on an episode of "Melrose Place" to air the first week of December. The band, discovered by ZZ TOP manager Bill Ham, has toured with KISS, sold over 10,000 CDs and was named the #1 hard rock band in the Austin Music Awards for the years 1997 and 1998...

strangeland.gif (9741 bytes)

...With no new CDs to review in our mailbox this week (don't worry - more are coming!), we decided to head to the movie theater to find something to write about. What better film to see than former TWISTED SISTER frontman DEE SNIDER's "Strangeland"? Unfortunately, pretty much any other film. Although Dee was terrific as a psychotic serial torturer/killer, "Strangeland" was choppy as hell, hard to follow and didn't make much sense. Add to that a lead performance by Kevin Gage that had about as much charisma as the Maytag repairman and you've got one plodding, senseless horror film. There were some good moments: Robert Englund was terrific as a redneck vigilante and the soundtrack rocked hard. But overall, "Strangeland" was disappointing. Too bad - we were hoping that Dee Snider would become the next Freddy Krueger/Jason Voorhees horror character and that we'd get to see more of him year after year after year...

...After weeks of rumblings about signing a major American act, Z Records has announced that they have officially signed rockers LILLIAN AXE. The band's first release on their new record label will be released in Spring of 1999. For more info, check out the Z Records website at http://graffiti.virgin.net/zero_option_pro.z_records/

...Ventura, California rockers HELARAGE have scored the opening slot for the October 11th CINDERELLA show at the Ventura Theater. Now a three-piece band, HELARAGE also opens for LIZZY BORDEN at the Shack later this month...

...Puerto Rican rockers PUYA , in response to the damage and injuries caused by
Hurricane Georges, have announced that they are coordinating and will perform at a

Hurricane Relief Fund. Says lead singer Sergio Curbelo, "Puerto Ricans, Floridians and

...KISS' "Psycho Circus" (read our review) opened at the #3 position on Billboard's Top 200 list this week, marking the highest debut ever for the veteran rockers. But the real chart news this week was Christian rockers dc Talk whose "Supernatural" opened in the #4 position, ironically between KISS and MARILYN MANSON (read our review)...

...All-woman hard rockers PHANTOM BLUE came away winners at the Third Annual "Rock City Music Awards" held on September 10, 1998 at the Country Club in Reseda, California. The band, nominated for seven awards, came away with three: "Best All Female Band" (for the third year in a row), "Best Female Guitarist" (for Tina Wood) and "Best Female Drummer" (for Linda McDonald). The band then went on to prove they'd earned the awards by playing a blistering four-song set. If you weren't there, you can hear the band live on their new CD, "Caught." For more about PHANTOM BLUE, check out their website at http://www.phantomblue.com...

...WHITE ZOMBIE has officially called it quits after 13 years. According to a group release from the bandmembers, it was time for everyone to "move on." Even more reason to check out ROB ZOMBIE's recent solo release, "Hellbilly Deluxe" (see our review)...
