PICK OF THE WEEK
STAR WARS: EPISODE I - THE PHANTOM MENACE (Fox)
Starring Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, Jake Lloyd, Ian McDiarmid, Samuel L. Jackson, Terence Stamp, Pernilla August
George Lucas' much-beloved, much-maligned fourth Star Wars movie is released to video. Regardless of what some Star Wars snobs say, this is a very entertaining, very visual motion picture that delivers the goods. The only real disappointment here is that the Star Wars films will not be available on DVD, according to the distributor, "for the foreseeable future." Rated PG; 133m. Available:

Soon the P.I. finds himself mired in corruption and even incest. Based on the novel by James Ellroy. Not a bad noir film but not a terrific one. Michael Rooker, a great character actor, is somewhat out of his league here in a lead role. Regardless, fans of hard-boiled detective stories should find something here to enjoy.
