PICKS OF THE WEEK
BEING JOHN MALKOVICH (USA Entertainment)
Starring John Malkovich, Cameron Diaz, Catherine Keener
The stunningly original film - all but totally overlooked by this year's Oscars
- in which a group of individuals finds a portal that leads them directly into
the mind of actor John Malkovich. Look up the word "original" in the
dictionary and there should be a picture of this thought-provoking comedy/drama.
Well-written, directed with intelligence by Spike Jonze and loaded with
excellent performances (especially Malkovich as himself and a standout
performance by Cameron Diaz). Highly recommended. Rated R; 113m. Also
available on DVD featuring widescreen presentation; Dolby; theatrical
trailers and TV spots; documentaries; interviews; a photo gallery. $24.98.
GALAXY QUEST

PICKS OF THE WEEK
AMERICAN BEAUTY
(DreamWorks)
Starring Kevin Spacey, Annette Bening
The Best Picture Oscar winner of 2000 is released to homevideo. This film is a
stunner; the tale of a man who decides to re–prioritize his life and damn the
consequences. Of course, it's about much more than that. Great performances,
great writing, great direction - a truly great film. Winner of five Academy
Awards. Rated R; 122m; Closed-captioned.
MYSTERY, ALASKA
(Hollywood)
Starring Russell Crowe, Hank Azaria, Mary McCormack, Lolita Davidovich, Ron
Eldard, Colm Meaney, Maury Chaykin, Burt Reynolds
Truly inspirational film about a smalltown ice hockey team - who literally live
to play hockey - who get their chance to prove their stuff on the ice with the
professional New York Rangers. Outstanding performances throughout -
particularly by Crowe, Reynolds and McCormack - in addition to surprisingly
sensitive direction by Jay Roach (Austin Powers) combine to enhance this
heart-lifting, but profanity-laced, film. Written by David E. Kelly. Rated R;
119m; Closed-captioned. Also available on DVD.
