PICKS OF THE WEEK
FORGOTTEN SILVER (First Run Features)
Featuring Sam Neill, Leonard Maltin
A filmic hoax if there ever was one. Famed horror director Peter Jackson
("Dead Alive," "The Frighteners" and now hard at work on the
highly-anticipated "Lord of the Rings" series) and fellow New Zealand
filmmaker Costa Botes made this film about the discovery of rare,
turn-of-the-century films from pioneer Colin McKenzie who apparently paved the
way for, not only New Zealand's film history, but the world's. McKenzie had
invented sound film, color film and many camera techniques years before they
were originally credited. Only one problem: McKenzie never existed. The film is
a "Spinal Tap"-type documentary. But you wouldn't know it from the way
it looks or is executed. If you're not in on the joke, "Forgotten
Silver" is a fascinating documentary. If you're in on the joke, it's a
hilarious "mockumentary." Additional DVD features include:
Commentary by the directors;
Interviews with cast and crew;
Previously unseen footage.
$29.95.
GEORGE LUCAS IN LOVE (MediaTrip.com)
The hilarious,
phenomenonally popular and extremely clever parody of "Shakespeare In
Love" follows "Star Wars" director George Lucas in his days at
USC and the events and people that inspired the incredibly popular film series.
"Lucas" runs 45m. Also featured herein are three additional film
parodies: "Evil Hill," a cross between "Austin Powers" and
"Notting Hill"; "Film Club" a parody of "Fight
Club" where the entrants film each other rather than fight and "Swing
Blade" a cross of "Swingers" and "Sling Blade." Of the
four, "George Lucas in Love" is by far the best - but the others are
certainly worth seeing. $14.95. Visit http://www.mediatrip.com

case. The story and script are riddled with cliches and contrivances that doom
the film to utter silliness. Rated R; 113m; Also available with Spanish

WHAT LIES BENEATH? (Dreamworks)
Starring Harrison Ford, Michelle Pfeiffer
Director Robert Zemeckis does his best to imitate the master of suspense, Alfred
Hitchcock, in this thriller about a man and wife and the ghost of a woman who
haunts their home. Sometimes Zemeckis succeeds - his film is sometimes eerie and
frightening. However, all thrills tend to deteriorate as the film's finale grows
more and more ridiculous, eventually smashing through the viewer's suspension of
disbelief. Still, Ford and Pfeiffer are two of the most watchable stars around.
Rated PG-13; 130m. Also available on DVD featuring:
Audio commentary by
Zemeckis, Producer Steve Starkey and Director of Photography Don Burgess;
HBO's "First Look" behind-the-scenes featurette;
Theatrical trailers;
