THE CONTENDER (Dreamworks)
Starring Gary Oldman, Jeff Bridges, Joan Allen, Christian Slater
Writer/director Rod Lurie helms this tale of a senator, eyed to replace the recently deceased Vice President of the United States, whose reportedly sordid past may prevent her from taking the position. Fine performances throughout (both Bridges and Allen are nominated for Oscars) and taut direction make this one a gripping thriller. Conservatives may complain that they're made out to be the bad guys here (they're really not; everyone's the bad guy in this film) but the film's real point is this: Let's got on with the running of the country and get over this ridiculous party bickering. Rated R. Also available on DVD.
