Pick of the Week
THAT DARN PUNK (Kung Fu Films)
This ultra low-budget ($21,000!) independent feature plays sort of like a parody of a Quentin Tarantino film. The story follows a punk rocker who is having a really bad day. First, his girlfriend leaves him, then he's kidnapped by hitmen, then a crazy woman with a human head in her trunk gives him a ride, then he's abducted by flying saucers, then he's framed by a conspiracy theorist - well, you get the picture. Often bizarre, sometimes very funny film also features music by bands like The Vandals, Rancid, Pennywise, Nerf Herder and Guttermouth. Sure, it's ultimately ridiculous but - if you go with the flow - you can have a good time here. For more information, please visit http://www.thatdarnpunk.com

4 DAYS (Paramount)

A young boy and his father doublecross a bank robbery partner who follows the boy as he goes to meet up with his dad. Great cast can't pull this one out of the depression doldrums. There are unpleasant good films - like "Requiem For a Dream" - and there are bad unpleasant films - like this one. Rated R.

BILLY ELLIOT (Universal)
Starring Julie Walters, Jamie Bell
The critically acclaimed film about a young boy who would rather learn how to dance than to box is released to homevideo. Well-made film gets big points for its feel-good attitude, but suffers from a severe lack of originality. In other words, if you've seen films like "Rocky" and "My Left Foot," nothing in "Billy Elliot" will surprise you. Rated R for plenty of profanity. Also available on DVD featuring:

THE LADIES MAN (Paramount)
Starring Tim Meadows, Karyn Parsons, Billy Dee Williams, Tiffani Thiessen, Lee Evans
Tim Meadows brings his Saturday Night Live sketch to the big screen with this tale of a popular radio talk show host whose way with the ladies isn't appreciated by their neglectful husbands. Sometimes funny, often dull film isn't the best of the SNL film library and plays like an over-extended sketch rather than a full-length motion picture. Still, Meadows' character is often very funny, so film isn't a complete waste. Rated R; 84m.
