PICKS OF THE WEEK
 SAMMY HAGAR & THE WABORITAS: CABO WABO BIRTHDAY BASH TOUR (Image)
A two DVD set featuring a live performance by legendary rocker Sammy Hagar on his Birthday Bash Tour, in which he was touring for his latest CD, "Ten Thirteen." Songs featured include "I Can't Drive 55," "Little White Lie," "Finish What Ya Started," "Eagles Fly," "Three Lock Box," "Mas Tequila," "Heavy Metal," "Why Can't This Be Love" and more. Also included is a second disc which includes a one-hour interview with Hagar plus footage from the famous Cabo Wabo Cantina in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. DVD: $24.99. Also available on VHS at $19.99.

MEAT LOAF: TO HELL AND BACK (Paramount/VH-1)
Starring W. Earl Brown and DeDee Pfeiffer
Terrific dramatization of rock singer Meat Loaf's autobiography telling of his tumultuous youth, his quest for rock stardom and the peaks and valleys he reached when he finally got where he wanted. Honest, eye-opening and very well-made. From director Jim McBride. Features original songs performed by Meat Loaf. Rated PG-13.

Also new this week
3000 MILES TO GRACELAND (Warner Bros.)
Starring Kurt Russell, Kevin Costner
It pains me, as a fan of both Russell and Costner, to say this, but "3000 Miles to Graceland" is one big train wreck of a movie. Overloaded with ridiculous action sequences and a ludicrous story, "Graceland" plays like a bad music video that never ends. Still, it's fun to see Costner play a bad guy and to see Russell back in his Elvis persona. The story? Oh, yeah - it's about a group of Elvis impersonators who rob a casino. Rated R. Also available on DVD.

BEHIND THE PLANET OF THE APES (Image)
Hosted by Roddy McDowall

THE MEXICAN (Dreamworks)
Starring Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt, James Gandolfini
A peculiar little combination of romance, road film and crime drama, "The Mexican" still manages to hold together thanks to its great cast (especially Gandolfini) and a suitably bizarre story. Not your average Julia Roberts flick. Rated R. Also available on DVD.

RUGRATS TITLES (Paramount/Nickelodeon)

"Enemy at the Gates" features terrific performances, incredible battle sequences and a story that is nothing short of riveting. Highly recommended though not for everybody due to its necessary violence and gore. DVD features include:

PICKS OF THE WEEK
HANNIBAL (MGM)
Starring Anthony Hopkins, Julianne Moore, Ray Liotta, Gary Oldman, Giancarlo Giannini
Hopkins returns as "Hannibal the Cannibal" Lecter, the serial killer he immortalized in the Oscar-winning "Silence of the Lambs" in this film that takes place after Lecter escaped from prison. Sticks pretty close to the love-it-or-hate-it novel by Thomas Harris and is sometimes unpleasant, sometimes terrifying but always on the edge. A very different film than "Lambs" in that "Hannibal" is more of a horror film than that film was. Moore fills the shoes of Clarice Starling just fine (although no one can match the performance by Jodie Foster in the first film) and Gary Oldman, beneath tons of makeup, is virtually unrecognizable. Not for the weak of heart by any means. Rated R. Over four hours of bonus DVD features include:
Widescreen presentation
Dolby Digital 5.1; DTS Digital Surround Sound;
An alternate ending with optional director's commentary;
More than 35 minutes of deleted and extended scenes, all with optional director commentary;
A feature length audio commentary by director Ridley Scott

42 UP (First Run Features)
Director Michael Apted's long-running (remember when they were 7 UP?) film series, which follows a group of children from age 7 on up, continues with this new film. BATMAN (Fox)
Starring Adam West, Burt Ward, Frank Gorshin, Cesar Romero, Burgess Meredith, Lee Meriweather
For my money, the best Batman movie until "Mask of the Phantasm" is a campy delight, complete with ridiculous villains, outrageously stupid stunts and a lot of truly funny lines. In addition, any time you get to see Gorshin chew the scenery as the Riddler is time well spent. Special Edition DVD features:
Audio Commentary by Adam West and Burt Ward
Tour of the Batmobile
All-new Batman featurette
Behind the scenes still gallery

Starring Jean Reno
Director Luc Besson's ("The Story of Joan of Arc," "The Fifth Element") is a tale of a post-apocalyptic future in which a determined loner befriends an older man and the two battle the elements and others for food, shelter and their very lives.
