Here, a town that has all but made Halloween illegal has to face its past demons in order to bring the holiday back to the people, especially children, who really enjoy it. A fun little picture with special effects that are gruesome without being gory. PICKS OF THE WEEK
61* (HBO)
Starring Thomas Jane, Barry Pepper, Richard Masur, Bruce McGill, Donald Moffat, Anthony Michael Hall
Billy Crystal directed this film about the summer of 1961, when baseball stars Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle were both racing to reach Babe Ruth's record of 60 home runs in a single season. Told with great love, respect and surprising honesty (if would have been easy for Crystal to overdo it here; but he does not); 61* is a love letter to the sport of baseball and is all the more intriguing because of the Mark McGuires and Barry Bonds of today. DVD features include:
The Greatest Summer of My Life: Billy Crystal and the Making of 61*
Audio commentary by Billy Crystal (guaranteed to be fascinating and entertaining)
Historical information about Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris
A 1961 homerun timeline
Widescreen format

THE TAILOR OF PANAMA (Columbia/Tri-Star)
Starring Pierce Brosnan, Geoffrey Rush, Jamie Lee Curtis, Brendan Gleeson
One of the year's best films comes to VHS and DVD. Brosnan stars as a disillusioned English spy, sent to Panama as a sort of "punishment," who instead uses his wily, conniving ways to coerce a simple tailor into selling him the secrets of Noriega and Panama. A fascinating, absolutely riveting film with Brosnan giving a tour-de-force performance as a spy very different from his James Bond and Rush shining, as usual, with a performance that lives and breathes. Jamie Lee Curtis, as Rush's wife, is also brilliant here. A terrific film from director John Boorman that hopefully won't be forgotten come Oscar time next year. Rated R; 109m. DVD features include:
Digitally mastered audio and anamorphic video
John Boorman's commentary
The Perfect Fit: A Conversation with Pierce Brosnan and Geoffrey Rush
Alternate ending with optional commentary
Theatrical Trailers
Filmographies
Interactive Menus
