BANDITS (MGM)
Starring Bruce Willis, Billy Bob Thornton, Cate Blanchett, Troy Garity, Bobby Slayton, Brian F. O'Bryne, Stacey Travis
Willis and Thornton star as a pair of bank robbers whose exploits wind up becoming the stuff of primetime news television. Adequately entertaining film due to its unusually terrific cast - I mean, how can you top Willis, Thornton and Blanchett? - but director Barry Levinson can't seem to decide what kind of film he wants to make. Hence, "Bandits" is neither funny enough, dramatic enough or action-packed enough. Rated PG-13; 122m. Also available on DVD featuring:

THE MAN WHO WASN'T THERE (USA)
Starring Billy Bob Thornton, Frances McDormand, James Gandolfini, Tony Shalhoub
Thornton stars as a barber in a small town, the kind of man who everyone knows but whose personality and occupation are so bland that he often hears things that aren't really meant for him to hear. It also gives him the ability to do things that he couldn't otherwise do - such as murder his wife's lover. A brilliantly dark film, not for anyone who doesn't like dark films. Featuring another standout performance by Thornton who is so different here than in, say, "Bandits" that it's almost difficult to recognize him. The screenplay and direction, as is usually the case with a film by Joel and Ethan Coen, is far above average but the real star here is the photography which is shadowy, stylish black-and-white film noir. Not for everyone but still another triumph from the team that brought you "Fargo" and "Oh Brother Where Art Thou?". DVD features include:
Commentary by Joel and Ethan Coen also featuring Billy Bob Thornton

Making "The Man Who Wasn't There"
Interview With Cinematographer Roger Deakins
