Former TROUBLE drummer, Jeff "Oly" Olson (RETRO GRAVE) is responding to emails and comments from fans regarding the misprint of the first European vinyl pressing of Trouble's 'Live in LA.' Says Olson: "Many people have been writing and asking about the European vinyl pressing of Trouble's 'Live in LA' album from High Roller Records. The album states that Mark Lira is playing drums on that album, but it is indeed myself performing entirely. In addition, the band photo was taken at the show, but not printed on the album (Lira's photos were posted instead). Yes, it is also my kit on the back cover of the album from my last show with Trouble at The End Club in Nashville (July 2008). High Roller Records has apologized to me for this error and has promised to make the corrections if more albums are pressed in the future (500 have already been pressed). I understand that this was only a mistake and there are no hard feelings about it at all. I hope this now clears it up." RETRO GRAVE's debut full-length album, "Again", was released on February 9, 2010. Olson composed all the music for "Again" with lyricist Paull Goodchild...

...SILENT CIVILIAN, the band led by SPINESHANK vocalist Jonny Santos, has completed work on its sophomore album for an early 2010 release via Mediaskare/Century Media. Says Santos: "Musically, this record is very different from the last, but evolution is the key to longevity, in my eyes. I believe we are making a record that will retain what is the main essence of SILENT CIVILIAN, but maturing greatly pushing forward. Having another guitar player contribute more to this record as opposed to the last, in which I wrote 90% of the music, is a plus. This record is also much more violent than the last and will be less produced in the sense that I am really trying to capture the elements of a 'live' thrash metal band on tape. There is not much room to breathe with this one, and I want to sonically beat the shit out of the listener without losing their interest. Dynamically, it will be a roller coaster of beatings and abuse! Don't get me wrong, we will still have very melodic moments as well, because melody has always been a strong part of metal. I am going with a lot of very traditional thrash metal riffs, because I don't really listen to very many newer bands out of fear that I will be influenced into sounding like the band of the week. I would rather be influenced by the bands that pioneered this genre of music (TESTAMENT, EXODUS, KREATOR, DEATH ANGEL [my favorite], FORBIDDEN, etc.)."...

...Earache Records will release GAMA BOMB'S new album, "Tales from the Grave in Space" beginning November 5th, as a FREE download via Rapidshare. According to the label and the band, the intention is to grow the overall fanbase of the band and promote sales of the CD box to be released in 2010, as well as increase concert ticket sales, merchandise sales, etc. Says the band's Philly Byrne: "We're giving the album away for free as a natural progression. It's an open-handed gesture that reflects the room the download revolution has created in the music business: the label is up for it, which would have been impossible 10 years ago. Also, it's a box-breaker for us: taking away the many restrictions of a physical-only traditional release opens us up to a new and wider audience. More people will hear the music and enjoy it and talk about it, and if that leads to them helping us out by buying a t-shirt or coming to a show, so be it. We're making our own kind of history here, and it's exciting. It's an open road, so let's go." Adds Digby Pearson, Founder and Managing Director of Earache Records: "Actually the cost saving of distribution through the internet is a big incentive for us. Piracy is not a problem, because if a fan passes on the download link it can also be seen as free promotion for the band. In the future we expect digital music to be ubiquitous and the payments made to the artists or those who look after the artists to be small but consistent." ...EVILE bassist, Michael Alexander, has passed away. The 32-year old musician collapsed on Monday after complaining about not feeling well the day before. Although no official cause of death has yet been released, a blood clot is suspected. Evile members Matt Drake, Ol Drake and Ben Carter released the following statement: "This is so hard to find the words to express fully how we feel. We can’t believe or accept what’s happened. One minute we’re talking to our buddy, Mike, the next minute we can never speak to him again. There’s so many things rushing through our heads that we want to say, do and feel. We half expect him to come round the corner and call us ‘dickheads’. We can’t get our heads around it. It upsets us so much that he was away from his family when this happened, although knowing Mike, we’re at least glad he was on tour doing what he loves. We’re lost for words. We all miss him so much already. He was such a headstrong, genuinely nice guy who loved music and his family. We’ve got so many brilliant memories with him. Our hearts go out to his daughter, family and friends at this tragic, difficult time. Mike is much loved and is sorely missed. Rest in peace, brother"...

LIVE REVIEW: LES CLAYPOOL, at the Ventura Theatre, was a tidal force of musical energy that left me breathless. When Claypool was born there must have been a little bass guitar attached to him and he must have learned to play it before he started to walk or talk. Claypool was touring in support of his new release, "Of Fungi and Foe," and -- from the first note he played -- he did not disappoint. He started with a few Primus cuts before he moved to the new material, but that was fine with me and the rest of the crowd; it got us in the right mood. The band consisted of Claypool on bass (of course), a drummer, a cellist (yes a cellist) and a xylophone player (who also played percussion). That's it. Not your standard mix of musicians but Claypool is anything but standard. One highlight of many was the band's great rendition of Black Sabbath’s "Electric Funeral." The four members pounded on their instruments for close to two hours and, when they were done, I left the venue extremely happy and completely satisfied. Les Claypool and the band put on a great show! if they're coming your way, trust me: it will be well worth your time. If they don't make it out your way, well, I saw a lot of phones shooting video, so maybe you can find some material on YouTube...

Some releases deserve to be posted in their entirety: "FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: JUDAS PRIEST UNLEASH NEW LIVE ALBUM, 'A TOUCH OF EVIL - LIVE'. As the creators of a live release that is considered to be one of the all-time great concert recordings in the realm of heavy metal (1979's 'Unleashed in the East'), whenever Judas Priest announce a new live album, metalheads worldwide instantly take note. And on 'A Touch of Evil - Live' (released July 14, 2009 via Epic Records), the mighty Priest - which includes singer Rob Halford, guitarists Glenn Tipton and KK Downing, bassist Ian Hill, and drummer Scott Travis - doesn't disappoint. Focusing primarily on fan-revered album cuts (all previously unreleased in live form on CD), 'A Touch of Evil - Live' features absolutely scintillating renditions of such Priest gems as "Riding on the Wind," "Beyond the Realms of Death," "Dissident Aggressor," "A Touch of Evil," "Eat Me Alive," and the set-closing "Painkiller." Also of note are the first live album appearances of standouts from Priest's critically acclaimed 2008 concept double disc, 'Nostradamus' ("Death" and "Prophecy"). Recorded by Martin Walker and Brian Thorene during the Judas Priest's mammoth 2005 and 2008 world tours, 'A Touch of Evil- Live' also marks the first Priest album that producer Tom Allom has worked on since 1988 (co-producing along with the band). It was such Allom-produced albums as the aforementioned 'Unleashed in the East,' as well as 'British Steel' and 'Screaming for Vengeance' (among others) that made Priest not only one of the premier metal acts, but one of the leading global rock acts. As heard throughout 'A Touch of Evil - Live,' Priest remain a must-see live act…and a must-hear one, as well. 'A Touch of Evil - Live' track listing: JUDAS RISING; HELLRIDER; BETWEEN THE HAMMER & THE ANVIL; RIDING ON THE WIND; BEYOND THE REALMS OF DEATH; DISSIDENT; AGGRESSOR; A TOUCH OF EVIL; EAT ME ALIVE; PROPHECY; PAINKILLER." ...PESTILENCE was unable to to headline the Maryland DeathFest due to their detainment at the US border. Band leader Patrick Mameli and guitarist Patrick Uterwyck were kept in custody for several hours and then sent back to the Netherlands. Upon entering the US and stopping at customs they discovered their paper work, which had been sent to them, was not properly completed for the required working visas. Originally they were told all was in order and to proceed on the trip to the US. They spent a total of 44 hours in flights and detainment - The two artists had flown the day before to give the USA metal-heads a "skull-crushing performance." Says the band's Patrick Mameli: “We are extremely sad and disappointed not being able to perform on the MDF. Not having received the proper information on our visa application, we were under the impression that what we received from the securing visas and working permits office was the actual working permits. We were kept under custody by the border security police for four hours trying to do everything in our power to let us pass, but all our efforts failed. They sent us home on the next plane. Hopefully we will be given another chance to perform for you, our fans!” For more information, check out http://www.myspace.com/pestilenceofficial

...We don't often post press releases in their entirety, but sometimes you just gotta. Congratulations to Ray Van Horn, Jr. , whose reviews you've read on the pages of RoughEdge.com... "FOR RELEASE: April 1, 2009 Baltimore, MD The winners of Metal Hammer magazine’s 2009 Web of Death Online Awards were announced today and Ray Van Horn, Jr. was given honors in the category of “Best Personal Blog” for his website The Metal Minute. The esteemed UK-based rock journal, in publication since 1984, recently hosted their internet excellence awards in response to Revolver magazine’s forthcoming Golden Gods Awards. Metal Hammer’s focus was designed to spotlight journalists and online heavy metal publications with their Web of Death Online Awards. The Metal Minute fell into the company of other award-winners such as Blabbermouth.net, Metal Underground.com, Metal Sucks.net, Metalrage.com, Metal-Rules.com, Punktastic.com and SMN News.com. On winning a Web of Death Online Award, Van Horn notes, 'I remember how difficult it was in the States during the eighties to hunt down Metal Hammer outside of deep-flung underground music stores, but it’s nothing short of surreal to be given this nod of recognition from a journal I read frequently in my teens along with Rip, Hit Parader, Circus, Kerrang, Fangoria and Gore Zone. To be acknowledged from the traceable birth region of heavy metal means more than a measurable amount to me. I can honestly say there have been times when personal and professional changes within the past year made The Metal Minute’s continuation rather suspect. My readers, my label providers, my publicist friends, my colleagues and especially the nomination from Metal Hammer made me dig deeper inside myself to make The Metal Minute a worthy source of journalism in support of a scene that refuses to let me go and vice-versa. 'I’ve seen some sad moments this year already with the passing of industry friends and the folding of respected magazines I’ve been on staff with for a considerable amount of time. Trying to find new homes to roost has presented considerable challenge while on the flipside, I have now been presented with a beautiful child I am about to adopt. In the same timeframe of hard adversity, I’ve had Rob Halford, Alice Cooper, Lemmy Kilmeister, Jon Schaffer, Trevor Phipps, Aaron Turner, Wayne Static, Mike Daly, Chris Poland, Ross the Boss, Grutle Kjellson, Damon Fox, Max Cavalera, Matthias Jabs and others on my phone. I have a featured gig in a local venue coming up next week, I recently lurched around as a zombie in an indie horror film and I have two new books to finish. Best of all, I am about to become a daddy and Metal Hammer has given my pet project blogsite a very humbling award. Life is good. Thank you to Rob Gill and the Metal Hammer staff for this generous bestowment.' Since going online, The Metal Minute has now gained close to 300,000 hits from an international base of readers. Featuring numerous album and DVD reviews, special-themed write-ups and video streaming in addition to the reader-praised “Take 5” interview series, The Metal Minute looks forward to continued service of the heavy metal, punk and horror scenes."...

...An update on SUSPERIA vocalist Athera (Pal Mathieson): He remains under close observation at Akershus Universitetssykehus Hospital in Lørenskog, Norway following his heart attack last week. The singer has been diagnosed with a previously undetected genetic disorder that will require the replacement of three narrowed arteries and three heart valves. He will undergo a triple heart by-pass operation through open heart surgery on Monday 16th March 2009. Meanwhile the singer is being kept on heavy doses of medication to keep his blood thin and his heart rate down. Though in a serious, but stable condition, Athera sent the following message to fans: "Hey everyone out there in the metal universe - friends and strangers. Thanks for all your messages of support. I'm lying here in the hospital reading them all and it's really nice to see that so many of you have taken the time to send them - Its overwhelming. I've had a big shock and it's not something I would want anyone to experience. You know, I always wanted to hit the headlines - but not in this way!!! Looks like the Susperia curse has hit again, a new album and tour on the way and one of us complicates it all. But damn it we will never let anything stop us - ever!! Even if death itself comes knocking and believe me it did. I am undergoing open heart surgery this Monday to replace some broken valves and veins, and then this metal heart will beat once again. The Doc(tor) says I'll be back stronger than ever. I will have to spend a long time in the hospital, but it's not that bad. You should see the nurses taking care of me ;-) Could be worse. Looking forward to getting back up and on the road again. Sorry for the shows that I'm not going to be able to do. I will make it up to you guys. You all make me stronger, I am truly grateful."...

The following message was released by FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH: "The rumors are true, only with less spins and no turbulence. Every band has its growing pains, and after 18 months in the trenches, relentless touring and living together, we all came to a conclusion that a change had to be made. It was a mutual agreement between the band and Darrell, and both parties wanted to handle this with class and as friends in our own time and on our own terms, however the rumor mill seems to work faster than anyone thought. "It was a swift and smooth transition and we all remain good friends. All clichés aside we really wish him the best on his musical endeavors. As for us, Darrell joined the band after our debut album was already recorded, so the direction and sound of Five Finger Death Punch obviously won't change a bit. Renowned shredder and the band's long time friend Jason Hook just finished up his contractual obligations with Alice Cooper, and he'll be taking over the second guitarist post. Zoltan exclaims, "He's an unbelievable player, and a good friend of all of us, so we hope our fans will welcome him in the Death Punch crew. We are pushing forward; the European tour is just a couple of weeks away, we're planning on more international tours in '09 and the release of our next record sometime this summer. We'd also like to use this opportunity to thank all of our fans for their dedication and their continuous support. It's a rarity these days, but you guys are truly amazing and made this band a big success. See you all in the pit!"...

...I BUILT THE CROSS out of Nevada has signed with Open Grave Records. According to a press release: "I BUILT THE CROSS was formed during the summer of '08 by two long time-time friends and ex-members of the popular death metal band Disfiguring the Goddess. As friends, Reed and Gare have been closer than brothers since before either of them can remember, and as musicians, they've been working together for the last several years. Although they have been involved in musical projects spanning various different genres all across the board, they claim that death metal is the only form of musical expression that can truly make their hearts, minds, and desires most tangible. I BUILT THE CROSS is a Christ-centered, spirit-led technical death metal band with a driven and distinguishable purpose: spread Jesus' name to an audience of people in a music scene that is generally stereotyped as "evil." To them, musicians aren't defined by the music they play, rather, it is the other way around. As a whole, I BUILT THE CROSS is ultimately concerned with clarifying the unconditional love of Jesus - the Savior, the Friend, the Father." ...From the "How Much Does This Suck" department, we received the following press release from CANOBLISS: "On the night of Saturday Dec. 27 someone broke into our practice studio and left with over $10,000 in gear!! They took Jon's guitars, amp, and cab; Sam's guitars and amp, Chenzo's bases and amp; a camcorder; a portable audio recorder; and Mikey's drum bag! Three of the stolen guitars were custom built Kaufman guitars with "Pedroza" or "Russo" engraved in the headstock, and Jon's amp is a rare Diezel VH4... so please keep an eye out for this gear and let us know if you spot it anywhere! Also, we are issuing a reward for any info leading to the capture of one or all of the perpetrators... the dumbasses left a glove at the scene, so if we're lucky we may put someone away for this!! We have already received amazing support from our friends and fans abroad, and from the local music scene with bands offering to help out with benefit shows and fundraisers. If you'd like, you can help us out and make a donation at www.canobliss.com. It will take much more than theft to keep us down, and we still plan on heading out across the Southwest this spring!! Have a great New Year!!"...
